Health Update, Personal Notes & Reminders

I hope this finds you well and that you’ve had an enjoyable summer.

A quick health update …

I am enjoying the time back in my power chair (though it is giving me fits at the moment, but hopefully, the technicians at the VA will be able to resolve these issues.). This Tuesday, September 3rd, I’m going into the Spinal Cord Unit at Jefferson Barracks’ VA in St. Louis for three weeks of intense physical and occupational therapy to build up my strength that I lost from being bed bound for 3.5 months.

My vocal cord surgery was a complete success. It was a tremendous experience to be half awake during the procedure listening to Dr. Garrett instruct her team in the process. I had to read sentences and make vowel sounds as they shaped an implant to be inserted into my left vocal cord. My voice is strong and I’m thrilled with the outcome. I return to Nashville on October 7th for a follow-up visit and will update you shortly thereafter.

A couple of personal tidbits …

One of my first outings after being able to get in my chair (after the 3.5 months of bed rest) was to attend a live production of WEST SIDE STORY performed by a marvelous cast with eleven thousand in attendance on a beautiful summer’s evening. The venue was the MUNY at Forest Park here in St. Louis. It’s an outdoor theatre that’s been around since the early 1900’s. Beautiful Forest Park which is also the location for the Scottish Festival held at the end of September.

Since arriving in St. Louis, I’ve had visitors from Colorado, Minnesota, Arizona, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. It’s been WONDERFUL to spend time with friends. I continue to be thankful for the outpouring of love and support from all of you! It amazes me that several of you never miss a week without sending me a greeting card—unbelievable!

Such great news re your vocal chord surgery!! I hope the PT/OT stint is going equally well – and that the techs manage to discipline your chair while you’re there! Our thoughts are with you.

Hi Alex!!! My Mom, Regina Stewart is here in CA visiting and we were just talking about you so we checked your update. So thrilled to hear you are doing well and on the continued road to recovery!!! Can’t wait to hear your new voice some day at a Scottish Games!
We love you and think of you often as we listen to you serenade us!
Keep a song in your heart and a joke or two in your back pocket…I know you do!

Hi Alex,
So glad to read about your PT/OT. Keep up the good work. I certainly missed seeing you at the Arlington, Texas Scottish Festival. I hope that next year or the year after you will be back.

Mary Ann Lyckman —

So glad to see that you have such good friends you can gather together for a good time. Looks like a hoot.

Hope all is going as planned with your therapy. Can be such a hard thing but with surprisingly good results.

Know that you have so many fans out here praying and thinking of you. MA

My Dear Alex,
I just found your page and I was shocked to hear of your plight for the past year or so.
I have such fond memories of the times that I was able to hear your wonderful songs in person.
You know “cousins”, no matter how distance should stay in touch. :)
Someday soon I do hope I will be hear your voice in person again.
Do what you have to to regain your strength, for you are an inspiration to us all.

Alex,
We had heard that you were ill and in Atlanta, but had no idea of what had happened until I read you update in the Highlander. We were most saddened. I remember fondly when you sang at the St. Andrew’s Society of the Middle South in Birmingham, Alabama when I was president. What a wonderful treat.
I advised several members, including Pete McCarn, Nelson Forbes and our present President, ET Brown. Best to you and your family.
